Biography
Robert Oaten is Technical Director at Metier, where he leads the technical development of hydrogen internal combustion engine solutions for commercial vehicles, off-highway machinery and generator applications.
He also oversees Metier’s components division, supporting the supply and integration of specialist systems and hardware for low-carbon propulsion projects.
With extensive OEM-facing engineering experience across vehicle systems, software, controls, electronics and powertrain integration, he has worked on programmes involving vehicle manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers and specialist technology partners, giving him a strong understanding of the engineering standards, validation expectations and delivery discipline required to move from prototype concepts into real-world production environments.
His experience covers conventional, electric and low-carbon propulsion systems, including system architecture, control strategy, calibration, diagnostics, vehicle integration and product delivery. This breadth allows him to bridge the gap between detailed technical development, component supply, system integration and the practical requirements of OEMs, operators and end-users.
At Metier, Robert is focused on developing practical hydrogen engine solutions that can help decarbonise sectors where battery-electric and fuel-cell technologies are not always commercially or operationally suitable.
His work includes engine control, safety systems, vehicle integration, regulatory compliance, component strategy and the wider engineering pathway from prototype demonstration through to scalable production.
Combining hands-on technical knowledge with senior engineering and operational leadership, bringing together software, mechanical, electrical and commercial considerations, Robert delivers systems that are robust, serviceable and ready for demanding real-world use.
