Metier Technologies has achieved a major milestone in the development of hydrogen-powered transport after its hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2 ICE) demonstrator became one of the first road-legal vehicles of its kind in the UK.
The vehicle, built on a DAF LF 18-ton platform and repowered using Metier’s hydrogen internal combustion engine technology, has successfully passed its MOT and received certification for use on public roads.
The achievement marks an important step forward for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, demonstrating that the technology is ready to move beyond prototype development and into real-world operation.
From Demonstrator to Road-Legal Vehicle
Passing its MOT means the vehicle can now operate on public roads, allowing Metier to showcase the technology to fleet operators, regulators and policymakers in real-world conditions.
The vehicle has also received a V5 classification confirming zero CO₂ emissions, supporting the role hydrogen internal combustion technology could play in the decarbonisation of heavy-duty transport.
Delivering a Practical Alternative for Fleet Operators
Metier’s hydrogen powertrain currently delivers around 130kW of power, with plans to increase this to 170kW later in 2026. The company expects this to bring performance in line with equivalent diesel vehicles while maintaining zero-emission operation.
Unlike complete vehicle replacement programmes, Metier’s repower model enables existing diesel vehicles to be converted to hydrogen, providing fleet operators with a lower-risk route to reducing emissions.
Growing Interest at Home and Abroad
The milestone comes as interest in Metier’s hydrogen technology continues to grow across the UK and internationally. The company is already engaged in discussions with organisations across Europe, Australia, Korea, the United States and emerging hydrogen markets.
Metier is targeting commercial deployment from 2027 and is developing the capability to convert large volumes of heavy-duty vehicles as demand increases.
